Our planet is getting hotter, and here in the Las Vegas area, we definitely feel it! More and more, we rely on our air conditioners (A/Cs) to help us stay healthy and feeling comfortable. Unfortunately, keeping reasonably cool puts a huge demand on our electrical grid–and on our household budgets.

There’s more bad news. That much needed cooling we get from our A/Cs? It’s also harmful to the environment. The ever-increasing electrical consumption from A/Cs results in huge amounts of greenhouse gases in the form of carbon dioxide getting pumped into our atmosphere. Worldwide, it’s about 117 million metric tons a year! There are also some refrigerants used in A/C systems that, if leaked into the environment, also cause harm. However, having a reliable air conditioning service for repairs and maintenance can help protect consumers on that end.

Ready for Some Good News?

Perhaps due to the challenges surrounding keeping people cool and our planet reasonably healthy, modern technologies are constantly being developed to make A/Cs more energy efficient while also helping to mitigate their negative impacts.

Advanced technologies such as two-stage or variable speed compressors that adjust the speed of A/C motors are one such example. While traditional A/Cs operate at fixed speeds, this newer technology adjusts motor speeds based on the cooling needs of a given area. Two-stage compressors operate on high and low speeds while variable models offer multiple speeds. Both styles result in less energy use, fewer greenhouse gas emissions, and more money that stays in your pocket.

Don’t know which A/Cs offer these cost-saving, more energy efficient technologies? The Department of Energy working in conjunction with the Air Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Institute, an industry group comprised of about 300 A/C manufacturers, have devised a rating system known as SEER to help consumers determine this important information.

What is the SEER Rating System?

Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio, aka SEER, is an efficiency rating found by dividing the seasonal cooling output of an A/C by the total energy used to create said output. Why is it important to know your A/C’s SEER rating? The higher the rating, the more cost savings you’ll incur on your electric bills. And that translates to a lesser negative impact on the environment.

Presently, the Department of Energy requires all new A/C systems to have a SEER rating of 13 at minimum, with most boasting ratings from 14.5 to 22 and even as high as 25. If you’re looking to replace your outdated HVAC system and have a reliable air conditioning service company, they can help you select the best A/C system and ductwork for your home that also fits your budget.
