Summertime! The livin’ is easy. Fish are jumpin’, but is your gear ready to go? Don’t be caught flatfooted onshore. Know what it takes to prepare for fishing season in Toronto.
When is Fishing Season?
Fishing seasons in Toronto depend upon the species of fish and the location of the body of water. Some fish, such as sucker and rock bass, can be fished year-round. Others, such as Pacific Salmon, have specific dates. For example, Pacific Salmon can be fished from the fourth Saturday in April until September 30. Search online for the seasons for the area in which you want to fish and for the species you want to catch.
What Gear Should You Have?
Every angler needs a rod and reel. Choose these items based upon the type of fish you’d like to catch. There are four basic types of reels, spincast, spinning, baitcaster, and fly. Each has particular qualities that make it ideal for certain species of fish. When shopping for reels Toronto, be sure to talk to shop owners and explain your needs to get their expert opinion.
In addition, you’ll need a well-stocked fishing tackle box. Fill it with extra line and hooks, bobbers, sinkers, some lures, needle nosed pliers, and a first aid kit. Check this box at the beginning of every season to make sure the gear is still in good condition and didn’t deteriorate while being stored.
Do You Have a Fishing License?
If you plan to fish in Ontario for one day only, you can get a one-day sport fishing license. If you want to fish a lot over the season, you will need an Outdoors Card and a fishing license. You can apply for both of these online or in person at a ServiceOntario location or at a license issuer.
