Nowadays, natural pearls have become quite rare as they are natural products which occurs very less frequently because of pollution in the sea and also too much fishing is done in the sea.
However, there are cultured pearls that are created by human efforts. Both these saltwater pearls and the culture pearls are produced as a result of irritant which mollusks protects on themselves.
While you are buying pearls then you must remember the following:
- Since natural pearls are very rare, they will be too expensive. Most of the pearls that are available in the market are cultured pearls. You must therefore get yourself familiarized with both these two types of pearls.
- While judging pearls, you must first consider nacre. Both cultured freshwater and also natural saltwater pearls are in fact solid nacre.
- The thickness and number of layers of nacre will be important in deciding the quality of real pearl. This will produce its inner glow, the soft, its lustre, satiny sheen that can influence its real value.
- Also check the colour of the pearl. Though pearls will be available in many different colours but natural colours are considered to be the best.
- Smoothness of the surface of pearls are also important. Totally blemish-free pearls will demand a premium price however any small spots will not decrease its value but chips or cracks will certainly reduce its value.
- Round/spherical shapes are more in demand however pearls may look beautiful in any shapes.
- Generally, more the diameter of pearl it will be more expensive.
- There are different kinds of grading systems used in the market. While buying pearl you must try to understand the basis of grading.
- Pearls can be soft and porous, so you must be prepared to take care after them. Earrings and necklaces can be a safer option as compared to rings or bracelets, as they are more likely to get damaged while you wear them.
- Prefer to obtain a detailed certificate about the authenticity of the pearl while you are purchasing. A certificate will state the quality of the pearl and will also contain a detailed description about the jewellery.
